IP Core/Edge Networks
Core network and backbone network typically refer to the high capacity communication facilities that connect primary nodes. Core/backbone network provides path for the exchange of information between different sub-networks. Edge network provides information exchange between the access network and the core network. The devices and facilities in the edge networks are switches, routers, routing switches, IADs and a variety of MAN/WAN devices, which are often called edge devices. Edge network provide entry points into carrier/service provider core/backbone networks.

As operators deploy various mobile access technologies such as GPRS, 3G, WiFi, Mobile WiMAX, and LTE for various business reasons, they end up with multiple vendors and multiple silos for mobile access, control and multi-media core network functions which add to the complexity of the entire network resulting to increased operational cost and inefficiencies.
Integrating several network functions into a single element allows mobile operators to simplify their networks. These solutions are access independent that they can function across a range of 2.5G, 3G, and 4G mobile and wireless radio access networks. These platforms possess a high degree of system intelligence that allows a mobile operator to understand the details of each subscriber session, manage individual subscriber policies, and control network traffic flow.
CommVerge Solutions, in partnership with leading vendors provide Service Providers with Mobile Gateway multimedia core platforms, engineered specifically for the most demanding mobile networks.
Features & Benefits:
| |
| · Incorporates powerful technology with innovative design. They feature a distributed architecture, high-performance capabilities, service assurance, and subscriber awareness that set them apart from the competition. |
| · The distributed architecture utilizes a blend of high performance processing, significant memory, and powerful switch fabric to more intelligently and reliably handle mobile sessions. |
| · Call control and packet forwarding paths are separated on different control and data switch fabrics, reducing the number of traffic flow inefficiencies, which diminishes latency and ensures faster call setup time and handoffs. |
| · With the distributed architecture, all tasks or services can be allocated across the entire platform. This unique approach allows you to deploy more efficeint mobile networks that can handle a greater number of concurrent calls, optimize resource usage, and deliver enhanced services, while also providing easy scalability. |
Traditional IP routing has several well-known limitations, ranging from scalability issues to poor support of traffic engineering and poor integration with Layer 2 backbones already existing in large service provider networks. With the rapid growth of the Internet and the establishment of IP as the Layer 3 protocol of choice in most environments, the drawbacks of traditional IP routing became more and more obvious.
Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a standards-approved technology for speeding up network traffic flow and making it easier to manage. MPLS involves setting up a specific path for a given sequence of packets, identified by a label put in each packet, thus saving the time needed for a router to look up the address to the next node to forward the packet to. With reference to the OSI model, MPLS allows most packets to be forwarded at Layer 2 (switching) rather than at Layer 3 (routing).
CommVerge Solutions’ experience and expertise in IP technology enables us to provide effective and innovative designs and implementations of MPLS networks. This has given customers benefits of having connectionless Layer 3 routing and forwarding with connection-oriented Layer 2 forwarding.
Functions:
| |
| · Data packets are assigned labels. Decision of forwarding is based on the label content without inspecting the packet itself. |
| · Enable the creation of end-to-end circuits using any protocols and across any medium of transport. |
Benefits:
| |
| · Better reliability and performance due to the traffic management capability. |
| · Better recovery framework as compared to traditional Layer 2 VPN. |
| · Ability to create IP VPN based on MPLS model. |
