Futures discovered at USQ Engineering and Surveying event

Choosing your future can be a daunting task, but how better to prepare than to get the information you need straight from the horse’s mouth?

Discover Engineering and Surveying was a free event held at USQ Toowoomba on 26 July and USQ Springfield on 2 August, allowing those interested in learning more about the industry to speak with working professionals.

People interested in learning more about Engineering and Surveying got the chance to speak with recent graduates and working professionals, like USQ Bachelor of Spatial Science (Surveying) graduate Michael Topp, who is currently working as a registered Surveyor at Veris.

On the night Mr Topp enthusiastically shared that he chose surveying because he wanted a job that was active but not physically demanding, contained some office work with the opportunity to work with technology and software, and had strong employment opportunities.

Another Discover Engineering and Surveying presenter was Kimberley Davis, Senior Project Manager (construction) at Toowoomba Regional Council’s Waste Services, Water and Waste Services Group.

Ms Davis has a strong connection to USQ as a graduate of the University’s Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Civil Engineering). She is also currently studying a Master of Project Management and Master of Business Administration.

She told the aspiring engineers and surveyors in the crowd that they’d be entering a career of diversity that would take them to unexpected places.

“I am forever grateful for the challenges and opportunities that my employers have provided. One day I’m in Hi-Vis and work boots resolving issues onsite, and the next I’m in corporate attire reviewing contract documents and liaising with lawyers,” Ms Davis said.

“I get to exercise innovation, problem solve complexities and break through conventional barriers.

“Every job brings new challenges and opportunities, I am forever learning, and I love it.”
