GE Renewable Energy has secured a contract from Angat Hydropower to upgrade 218MW Angat hydropower plant in the Philippines.
According to the contract, GE will deliver two 50MW Francis turbines, four 50MW generators, three upgraded auxiliary turbines and generators.
In addition, the company will provide a new control system and evaluate the penstock and powerhouse.
GE’s European and American hydro teams will manage the deliveries. A local partner Desco will be responsible for the installation and commissioning of the Angat plant.
GE Hydro Solutions president and CEO Pascal Radue said: “I am delighted to start this collaboration with Angat Hydropower Corporation and support the country upgrading its hydropower assets.
“This new project confirms the presence of GE Renewable Energy in the Philippines, where the energy demand increases by 7% annually and relies on hydropower to meet the demand.
“The country is also enjoying strong economic growth. I am proud that GE Renewable Energy is part of this project that will provide the population with clean energy for many years.”
The upgrade works are expected to be completed by 2023 and will increase the facility’s power generation capacity by 4% to 226.6MW.
Commissioned in 1967, Angat hydropower facility supports the irrigation of 25,000ha of farmlands in Bulacan and Pampanga, according to Hydroreview. It also meets 90% of Metro Manila’s potable water needs.
The rehabilitated Angat hydropower plant is expected to supply additional reliable electricity in the Philippines while meeting the population’s water needs.
GE Renewable Energy said the upgrade will extend the life of the Angat hydropower plant by additional 50 years.
