A typical EPC firm consists of various engineering departments like Projects Department, Process Department, Piping Department, Civil and Structural Engineering Department, Static Vessels and Mechanical Engineering Department, Electrical Engineering Department, Instrumentation Engineering Department. These departments are assisted by Procurement Department, Inspection Department, Construction Department.
Projects Department is concerned with oveall co-ordination of the project. It co-ordinates with Client, Vendors and Engineering Departments within the firm. Its responsibilities include project planning, Scheduling, manhour control and ensuring timely completion of the project.
Process department’s main function is to update the process input documents like PFD, PIDs, Line list, UFD, Equipment data sheets etc. initially provided by the process licensor. It has to select proper pumps as per NPSH requirements and process requirements.
Piping department is concerned with development of plot plan, Equipment layouts, Piping layouts, Isometrics Drawings, 3d Models, Piping material specification updation, stress analysis of piping systems, providing input to other departments like Civil, Structural, Electrical, Instrumentation, Process etc.
Electrical department designs substations, MCC, Cable Trays for electrical cables along with other activities related to electrical supply to the various equipments in a process plant.
Instrumentation department choose various types of instruments, provides assembly instructions to piping department, designs cable trays for instrumentation cables, designs control room.
Vessels/Mechanical department designs static vessels as well as choose proprietary equipments like pumps, compressors, steam turbines, plate heat exchangers. It uses process equipment data sheets as input and completes mechanical design of vessels. It gets input from process as well as piping department.
Procurement Department‘s job is to procure various materials, equipments, instruments etc. for the project. It plans procurement activities as per project schedule and ensure timely delivery of material at the site.
Inspection Department visits vendor sites, inspects manufacture of ordered materials. It also checks quality of final purchased products. It also inspects fabrication of piping systems, Installation of equipments, structures, piping etc.
