What are roles, responsibilities and duty of IPS officer

Duty of IPS officer

Role of Indian Police in India is very critical. There is no doubt that Indian police service is one of the most respected jobs in India. IPS officers all around India are respaonsible to make sure that there is Law and order in country. IPS officers are selected through exam conducted by UPSC similar to IAS officers.

They serve for state as well as central government. Their primary duty is to make sure that people under their jurisdiction are safe.

At district level, an IPS officer works with IAS officer to maintain law. Some of the most important responsibilities of an IPS officer are Preventing crimes,  Preventing accidents (Social, Economic etc), Accident management, Detection of crimes and many more. (Dont worry, those are discussed below)

IPS officers have to follow a cadre system, where a state is allotted to an IPS officer and he/she is then responsible for security and safety of that particular state.

Roles of IPS officer change according to different IPS officers rank. However, there are some basic task which each IPS officer needs to perform in spite of their rank or allotted state or district.

However, before we get in to roles and responsibilities of IPS officers it is very important to identify all the ranks and designation as per those ranks. There are 5 designations with their associated time scales which are discussed below. 

First designation is Superintendent of Police which has 4 time scales, Junior, senior, junior administrative and selection grade scale.

Second designation is Deputy inspector general which only has one time scale that is super time scale.

Third designation is Inspector general and similar to Deputy inspector general, this designation also has only one super time scale.

Fourth designation is Additional director general and it has above super time scale.

Last designation is Director general of Police and this one also has above super time scale associated with it.

Maintaining Peace

One of the most important duty of IPS officer is to maintain peace among public as already discussed. IPS officers are responsible to make sure that they take all necessary decisions to maintain peace in their allotted state or district.

VIP Security

IPS officers are often responsible for security of VIP’s. In-fact, they are frequently allotted duty for protection of Chief ministers and Prime minister as well.

Drug and Human trafficking prevention

IPS officers are also responsible for preventing drug and human trafficking. This is done by working along with police officers and other IPS officers.

Disaster management

 If in an unfortunate condition, Disaster struck any of the area of nation, then it is responsibility of an IPS officer to make sure that situation is managed effectively. IPS officers have to identify the cause behind disaster and to make sure of security of people. 

Perform their duty with complete integrity

IPS officers have to make sure that rules are followed in their allotted district or state. Let it be in environmental laws, traffic laws etc. They have to make sure that all the laws are clear to people and that local police are making sure that all the laws are followed.

Prevent offences both physical and economic.

IPS officers have to make sure that there is no physical or economical harm to properties or people in their allotted area. In order to do that IPS officers have to collaborate with local police services to stay proactive and prevent such mishaps from happening.

Commanding Police Forces

IPS officers are responsible for commanding state  and union territories police forces.

Commander role for security Agencies

IPS officers also play role of commander for CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation), CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force), NSG (National Security Guard),  IB (Intelligence Bureau), BSF (Border Security Forces) and last but not the least, Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Work in Collaboration to other civil services members

It is duty of IPS officer to work along with all other members of civil and all India services .

Collaborate with Indian Army

They have to sometime coordinate and work along with Indian Army as well.

Managerial Policies

They have to share their inputs in Managerial policies made at central, state and district level.

Integrity and Responsibility

They have to perform all duties with dedication, courage and as a responsibility to the people of India. IPS officers have to realize that their duties are responsible for protecting human rights. Therefore they have to show high level of professionalism, mental and physical fitness as well.
