In stone masonry, the bed is the lower surface of stones on which they rest in a course.
The inner surface of a stone wall that is not exposed to the weather is referred to as the back.
The material used in back of the wall is known as the backing.
In stone masonry, the outer surface of a stone wall which is exposed to the weather is referred to as the face.
The material used on the face of the stone wall is referred to as the facing.
In stone masonry, the space of the wall between facing and backing is known as hearting.
